17-Point Comprehension Gap When Learning With AI Assistance—Are We Creating Developers Who Ship Fast But Can’t Debug?
I’ve been thinking a lot about something uncomfortable lately. We’re all celebrating AI coding tools—and don’t get me wrong, they’re genuinely impressive—but I keep noticing a pattern with the junior engineers on my team. They’re shipping features faster than ever, but when something breaks, they’re… stuck. Like, really stuck.
Then I came across Anthropic’s 2026 study on AI coding assistance and the numbers hit hard: developers using AI assistance scored 17% lower on comprehension tests compared to those who coded manually. The biggest gap? Debugging questions—the exact skill you need to validate AI-generated code in production.
The Velocity vs. Understanding Trade-Off
Here’s what’s happening on my team:
One of our junior engineers can now implement a complete feature in a day using GitHub Copilot—something that would’ve taken a week two years ago. Incredible productivity gain, right? But last week, that same feature had a subtle race condition that caused intermittent failures. It took three days and two senior engineers to debug it because the junior couldn’t explain why the code worked in the first place.
The Anthropic study found that how developers interact with AI matters more than whether they use it:
- High performers (65%+ on tests): Used AI for conceptual questions, asked follow-up questions after generating code, combined AI output with manual explanations
- Low performers (<40% on tests): Delegated all code generation to AI, progressively handed more work over to AI, relied on AI to debug issues rather than understand them

But here’s the problem: juniors aren’t just doing work—they’re supposed to be learning. And we’re creating a generation of developers who:
- Ship fast but can’t debug: They know what code to generate but not why it works
- Lack fundamentals: Skip the struggle of manually implementing algorithms, data structures, error handling
- Become dependent: Can’t code without AI assistance because they never built the mental models
- Create comprehension debt: Like technical debt, but for the team’s collective understanding

Who Trains the Next Generation?
The traditional path was:
- Junior writes simple features (learning fundamentals)
- Senior reviews code (teaching best practices)

- Junior becomes senior (cycle continues)
With AI, that’s broken:
- AI writes simple features (junior watches)
- Senior reviews AI code (but junior didn’t write it)
- Junior can’t debug AI mistakes (lacks comprehension)
- Junior… doesn’t become senior?

Research on the “AI mentorship crisis” warns we’re hollowing out the engineering pipeline. If AI handles the “learning tasks” that historically built expertise, where do future senior engineers come from?
So What Do We Actually Do?
I don’t have perfect answers, but here are some experiments my team is trying:
1. Mandate “AI-free zones” for learning
When a junior is learning a new concept (async programming, database transactions, etc.), they must implement the first version manually. No Copilot, no ChatGPT. After they ship it and understand it, then they can use AI to refactor or optimize.
2. “Explain it back” before merging
Before any PR from a junior gets merged, they have to explain the code’s logic to a senior in their own words. If they can’t explain it, they don’t understand it—even if the tests pass.
3. Pair debugging sessions
Instead of letting juniors ask AI to fix bugs, we pair them with seniors and walk through the debugging process manually. The goal is building that problem-solving muscle, not just getting unblocked.
4. Track comprehension, not just velocity
We’re experimenting with tracking “can explain their code in code review” as a metric alongside story points completed. If velocity is high but comprehension is low, that’s a red flag.
The Hard Question
But here’s what I’m really wrestling with: Is it even fair to make juniors learn “the hard way” when AI exists?
It’s like making someone learn to navigate with a paper map when Google Maps exists. Sure, understanding geography is valuable, but is it necessary if the tool is always available?
Or is this different? Because unlike Google Maps (which we trust), AI code still needs human validation—and you can’t validate what you don’t understand.

But right now, I’m not convinced we’ve figured that out. And I’m worried we’re creating a generation of developers who ship fast but can’t debug—which is great until something breaks in production at 3am and nobody knows why.
