Agentic AI Will Cover Nearly 1/3 of DevOps Tasks by Mid-2026—From Human-Executed to Autonomously Executed. What Happens to the Operators?

I just came back from a board meeting where our CFO asked when we’re “replacing DevOps with AI agents.” Not augmenting. Replacing. And he wasn’t subtle about the implications for our 12-person platform team.

This hits close to home. We’re a 120-person engineering org, and I’ve been navigating this exact tension for the past 6 months.

I’m going to push back on the inevitability narrative a bit—not because I disagree with the data, but because I’m seeing a different pattern in enterprise/regulated environments.

Coming at this from the product side, and I’m going to be blunt: the CFO’s question is a product question, not a technology question.
